“The Danzig and Petingo Super Cross”

By Michael Ventura, copyright 2005.

If we wanted to check how well Danzig has done with an ancestor such as Petingo in Europe accounting for opportunity, what would be the best way to
do it?

My studies indicate that the best way to do it would be first check the percentage of G1 Winners and Group Stakes Winner in Europe with Petingo on
one side regardless of whether or not Danzig is on the other and than compare that percentage to the percentage of Danzig’s G1 Winners and Group
Stakes Winners who do have Petingo on the other side.

In this way we can compare how well Petingo has done crossed with all Stallions as compared to how well he has done crossed with a particular
stallion (in this case Danzig).  In this way we adjust for the potentially positive or negative effects of both Petingo and Danzig .

For instance, a search of the G1 Goldmine database (a piece of pedigree software that now possesses the amazing ability to narrow down a search of
Graded/Group Stakes Winners for a cross to a particular Country or combination of Countries), reveal that of 621 G1 Winners born in Europe over the
last 14 years or so, 29 of the G1 Winners are descended of Petingo on the damside regardless of whether or not Danzig’s on the sireside.

This is a percentage of only 4.66%.

In contrast, we find that 6 out of 72 European G1 Winning with Danzig on the sireside have Petingo on the damside for a very good percentage of 8.33%.

What this means is that Danzig ’s percentage of G1 Winners with Petingo is 78% greater than that of the Overall Stallion Population’s percentage of G1
Winners with Petingo.

Also, very strong evidence for a strong bloodline affinity between Danzig and Petingo can be found in the simple fact that several examples of the cross
have been absolutely outstanding as runners: In fact, Pilsudski has the cross and he proved himself a truly outstanding International Performer by
winning the English Champion Stakes (GI), Irish Champion Stakes (GI), Breeder’s Cup Turf (GI), Japan Cup (GI), Eclipse Stakes (GI), and Grosser
Preis Von Baden (GI) besides finishing 2nd in the Prix de l’Arc de Triumph behind both Helissio in 1996 and Peintre Celebre in 1997 (in which year the
winner set the Still Standing Stakes Record for the race and Nine Group One Winners finished behind Pilsudski).

Also Westerner, the European Champion Stayer of 2004 and two-time winner of the French St Leger (GI) and Prix Du Cadran (GI) besides also winning
the 2005 Ascot Gold Cup (GI), and finishing 2nd by two lengths in the 2005 Prix de L’Arc de Triumph, possesses this fruitful pattern of crossing Danzig
and Petingo.

Learning From Pilsudski and Westerner

Now here’s the interesting thing: Pilsudski and Westerner both get their Petingo through his son Troy , who shows up as the damsire of both those
outstanding winners of 5 or more G1 Races apiece.

This may be taken as a sign that Troy could very well be the best source of his sire Petingo for crossing with Danzig.   And as a matter of fact this
suspicion is borne out.

You see, Troy is the ancestor of merely 8 European Born G1 Winners on the damside and of these Three of them (the previously mentioned Westerner
and Pilsudski as well as their fellow Multiple G1 Winner Fine Motion), are by sons of Danzig .

This means that while Troy has only 8 of the 621 European G1 Winners in the G1 Goldmine database for a percentage of 1.28%; Troy still managed to
show up on the damside in 3 out of the 72 European G1Ws with Danzig on the sireside for a significantly higher percentage of 4.16%.

Since 4.16% is 2.58 times higher a percentage than 1.61%, we may say that Danzig/Troy is a cross with a positive impact value of 2.58.

This positive impact value coupled with Westerner and Pilsudski unusually excellent (even for G1 Winners) race records, marks out Troy as the
Optimum Source of Petingo for crossing with Danzig .

So what is the lesson in all this?

Quite simply if you happen to own a stallion descended by Danzig, you should look hard for mares descended of Petingo (and especially mares
descended of Petingo through Troy ).  And of course if you own a mare descended of Petingo (especially through Troy ), you should look for a stallion
from the Danzig line.

Sources of Troy and Petingo

But through what sources can Petingo and Troy be found?  Well, with Troy we’re talking about a horse who tragically died after only 4 seasons at stud
and thus his impact through sons is pretty minimal compared to his strong influence through daughters (a highly unusual 81% of his G1 Stakes
winners in the database have him coming through female sources).

Still, besides seeking mares by Troy or mares out of mares by Troy (for you higher end breeders, a list of Troy daughters and granddaughters who have
produced Graded/Group Stakes Winners can easily be generated by searching the program for Troy on the damside), you can seek to take advantage
of this powerful bloodline affinity by finding a mare by the rare son of Troy such as Tropular (the sire of the’94 French Derby Winner Ragmar) or his
maternal grandsons like Pelder (the sire of the recent Italian G1W Senex), or sending a Danzig and/or Danehill line mare to Street Cry  (out of a mare by
Troy and standing in both America and Australia) or Shamardal  (has Troy as his 2nd damsire and will stand the 2005 breeding season in Australia
and the 2006 season in England).

Street Cry I consider an especially strong option for mares from the lines of Danzig’s strong sons Danehill and Green Desert: Note well that a mare by
Green Desert produced the Multiple G1 Winning Dubai World Cup (UAE-GI) Winner Almutawakel when bred to Street Cry’s sire Machiavellian.  Also,
Danehill gets his powerful Natalma female family returned by Machiavellian and has sired the Hong Kong Mile (HK-GI) Winner Scintillation from a
Machiavellian mare besides siring the dam of the very recent Fillies Mile (GB-GI) Winner Nannina, who is by another son of Machiavellian besides
Street Cry named Medicean (who lacks the advantage of having Troy like Street Cry does!).

As to Petingo, sources of his proven with Danzig besides Troy include his paternal grandson Ela-Mana-Mou (who is the damsire of two Group Stakes
Winning sons of Danehill and the 2nd damsire of another from VERY limited opportunity with him), and his maternal grandson Petoski (who has
crossed with Danzig in an amazing 2 out of his 2 G1 Winning Descendants).  Also, a very good option for Danzig line mares besides sending them to
the previously mentioned Street Cry and Shamardal is sending them to the underrated French Stallion Kaldounevees (a maternal grandson of
Petingo's son Satingo), who has already sired the Dubai Duty Free (UAE-GI) and Prix de L’Opera (FR-GI) Winner Terre A Terre from a mare by Danzig's
son Always Fair.
